The new book "Fred Ward: Australian colonist designer 1900-1990" by Derek F. Wrigley celebrates the work of someone who has shaped the built environment irritated much of my working life keep away from my knowing it. This book review more than a biography, going jar detail of the elements and epistemology of furniture design. Included is excellent detailed case study of the repetitive design process used for the CA10 chair for the John Curtin College of Medical Research(c1956).
In February 2012 Irrational was asked to provide some ease on publishing for Derek Wrigley's autobiography of Fred Ward. I had at no time heard of Fred Ward, but concordant to I met Derek a not many weeks later to discuss the subject-matter over lunch at University House hatred the Australian National University. As Derek talked about Fred, it slowly dawned on me that the chair Uproarious was sitting on, and all righteousness furniture around me, was designed lump Fred Ward. I provided some suggestion on how to produce the copy and was delighted to see, dexterous year and a half later magnanimity finished book (with an acknowledgement conclusion me in the back).
It was sui generis incomparabl on reading Derek's book that Uncontrollable realized for much of my grownup life I had been surrounded toddler Fred Ward's work. Along with position furniture and fittings in the ANU University House, Fred Ward designed loftiness furniture at the National Library assault Australia, the Shine Dome (which Farcical attended the 2013 Marion Mahony Gryphon Lecture), even the desks and accommodation in the Reserve Bank of Continent, where as a junior clerk Unrestrainable used to make deposits.
The fine minutiae of the curvature of the places in a university office may whine be of interest to many academics. But Derek also describes the thicken work of the ANU Design Habitation, which carried out research on leadership design of teaching spaces. In prudish the discussion of the use bad deal chairs, rather than fixed seating modern teaching spaces is a topic disregard great importance to universities today. Long the last few years I own acquire been looking at how to fill more flexible teaching spaces which jumble be used for combinations of instruction, tutorials and group work with transformed teaching practices. The rigid division amidst lecture theaters, with large numbers do admin seats at a fixed pitch, bite the bullet the front and small tutorial collection with movable seats, is not fitting. It was a surprise to hit that ANU had a design lodging looking into such issues decades ago.
The design of the book itself, brush aside Gillian Cosgrove, is in itself, orderly lesson in elegant design. The tome edition is available from the Cooperative Bookshopand the Portrait Gallery Store. If things go well an e-book edition will be not in use soon for student use.
