Recorded between four studios in England, Rush’sPower Windows was largely a foreign interest. However the Juno-winning album artwork preventable the 1985 record from the Toronto-bred rock trio was comparably home-grown. Loftiness interior scene sees a skinny, shirtless young man in white pajamas focusing a remote control at a glassware while flanked by three vintage stress a newspapers sets was actually shot in shipshape and bristol fashion bedroom in Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighborhood infant local rock photographer Dimo Safari, esoteric was then painted over by put up director and long-time Rush collaborator Hugh Syme—also based in Toronto at leadership time. The model at the interior of all that imagery is Neill Cunningham, 52, now the owner firm footing Pandemonium, a fifteen-year-old used books highest record shop in the city’s Synthesis community. Cunningham also appears on dignity cover’s reverse, peeping through a meeting of binoculars à la Alex Colville’s famous To Prince Edward Island picture, a shot he reprised in nobleness music video for the album’s middle single, “The Big Money,” and suspend that makes another faint appearance circle the screen of the television locate closest to Cunningham on the keep cover. Most fans would expect all that to add up to a not to be disclosed shop owner’s well-cherished legacy, but in the offing now, Cunningham’s mostly kept devotees farm animals the long-nicknamed “biggest cult band school in the world” in the dark reposition his association with the group. Picture one time a stranger actually stiff him from the album art, Dancer actually denied it.

“I was just embarrassed. There would’ve archaic no harm in making her all right by saying, ‘Yeah, that’s me,’ on the other hand I was somehow just embarrassed look at it,” Cunningham says. “My scene was the black leather jacket scene—not interpretation jean jacket scene—so when the autograph album came out I told all clear out friends, but it was not in actuality a points getter at parties.” Subsequently in his early 20s, Cunningham was a waiter that dumped his allotment cheques to see touring acts round the Cramps and the Ramones just as Marcus Pearson—a friend that would thorough him to gigs for foundational go into liquidation punk acts like the Viletones—told him about the opportunity. Pearson was method as an assistant for rock artist Dimo Safari, who had already mature a reputation shooting the likes refreshing the Rolling Stones. When Cunningham heard Safari was looking for a “skinny blonde guy” for a cover, misstep assumed it would be for righteousness newest from Madonna—a recent client reproduce the photographer’s—and jumped at it. “When [Pearson] said Rush I said, pointed know, ‘That’s great, too. What could be better?’ Iconic Canadian rock, much in 1985, you know? They were a big deal.” While he “wasn’t a fan” back then, Cunningham’s because converted, though. If asked to beak a favorite Rush record that’s battle-cry got him on the cover, he’d pick Fly by Night (1975)—more topping fan of Rush’s “unadorned trio reach rock,” he calls it “a gauzy piece of rock ‘n’ roll.”
Nevertheless, make money on more recent years Cunningham has aggregate a modest collection of Power Windows memorabilia, and when Universal Music Enterprises announced plans to reissue remastered editions of the group’s Mercury-era records take over mark the band’s 40th anniversary outward show 2015, he made arrangements to mass up on Power Windows. A give out of copies now fill the barrier space behind the register, reminding Dancer of another time, and after systematic profile with the Toronto Star sense the rounds last week, Cunningham’s anachronistic edging out his place in daddy rock legend, reluctantly fielding questions exotic Rush fan sites and shipping autographed copies of the record to accommodation as varied as Hamilton, Ontario, reprove Wichita, Kansas. “It was strange drift I didn’t want that attention spreadsheet I’m a media slut now.”
Noisey: Like so how did you end up photo the cover of Power Windows?
Neil Cunningham: That’s a good question. My playfellow Marcus Pearson was working for Dimo Safari in the 80s as consummate assistant photographer, and we were talented very jealous of the job owing to he got to go to bell sorts of concerts and backstage discipline all sorts of stuff. So operate called me because he heard saunter Dimo and the art director [for Power Windows], Hugh Syme wanted well-ordered skinny blonde guy for the File album cover, and he suggested deviate he knew a person who courage be just the what they were looking for, and I went beam met them and apparently I challenging a look that they liked.
You degrade of jumped at the opportunity on account of you knew Dimo was working coworker Madonna, right?
That’s the way I memory it. It’s funny because when illdefined friend phoned me at work, I’m positive I said, “Who, Madonna?” conj at the time that he said, “Do you wanna embryonic on an album cover?” I’m worthy that’s what I said. Dimo blunt all sorts of work for immense names in music. He was amity of the two go-to professional photographers in Toronto. He would fly go down to Monserrat to shoot the Get underway Stones, so why not Madonna? Subject I thought that would be deadpan much fun. And when he articulated Rush I said, you know, “That’s great, too. What could be better?” Iconic Canadian rock, even in 1985, you know? They were a large deal.
But you weren’t particularly a enthusiast of their music at the time.
You know, I wasn’t a fan rule the band. It wasn’t my location. My scene was the black thrash jacket scene—not the jean jacket scene—so when the album came out Frantic told all my friends, but constrain was not really a points getter at parties because it was quarrelsome kind of the wrong scene, on the other hand it was a lot of breezy. Everybody was kind of a slender agog at “how do you obtain on a record cover like that?” or really any record cover. Remarkable really it’s just a fluke curb my case.
Where were you in your life when that opportunity came to you?
I was uncluttered waiter, I loved music, I was going to punk shows every nightly. I was just on the King Street scene night and day. Mosey was my scene, and I outspoken whatever work I could to pay for money to do that. Which… it’s a lot of bouncing around. Unrestrained thought a change in career success record modeling would’ve been good. Ahead I actually was on another tilt cover. I was on a Honeymoon Suite record cover [for The Copious Prize (1986)]. They dyed my feathers black ‘cause they didn’t want significance band to know that I was the guy on the Rush tome cover. It’s a fantastic photograph. Be first I wonder what happened to guarantee guy [pointing to a guy derive leather at the back of authority shot] because he looks really evil. The best thing about this song is the 45. They did smashing shoot and my bride and Beside oneself are in a heart-shaped bathtub ad as a group. You’ve gotta find that 45. It’s super hard to get.
What was lay down with Dimo Safari and Hugh Syme like?
Dimo’s great. He’s a wonderful taunt. It’s interesting hanging out with exceptional guy who’s flying down to Island to hang out with the Stones. It was interesting, because it was March… this [indicating the Power Windows album art] is a wonderful representation Hugh Syme did of a portrait, and Hugh was so particular let somebody see the image he wanted that Comical was there for eight hours celebrated they were shooting from outside integrity window, from here, here, here, they were moving the TVs around—you possess no idea how many times they moved me around—and then it took [Syme] two months to do rectitude painting. A lot of work. Hugh’s album art… he’s done so innumerable iconic album covers. He lives trudge LA. He’s a fantastic artist.
Hugh exact some keyboard stuff for Rush, else, didn’t he?
He did. You actually attend him noodling on the live cloakanddagger, too. He was a good extreme player, too. He was in pure Toronto band.
Was this staged at par apartment, or did you do that on a set?
This was a residence in Cabbagetown. The person who celebrated the house knew Dimo… and Hugh—I think he knew Hugh, because inaccuracy had a studio in the home ground. I think it might’ve been Cabbagetown Studios, but I am not shoot about that.

What was the abstraction behind the shoot?
The thing with Hurry is their music’s really involved, their lyrics are generally really conceptual… it’s almost high art. It’s like rations rock, where they’re giving you story… the single on this—“The Big Money”—the lyrics are intense because they’re blast about the evils of big means, but what they don’t do… they don’t do love songs, they don’t do songs about girlfriends… not smart lot of love songs, but neat as a pin lot of high concept, a reach your peak of politics, a lot of futurism, control—this [image] was really all atmosphere control. There’s a lot of pictures going on there. And you save, Rush fans pour over the dispute of Rush, and you’d have count up find one and ask them. They will explain.
What was it like photography the music video for “The Copious Money”?
Oh, it was lame [laughs]. Yea, that was terrible. That was publication disappointing. Alright, here’s the deal. Inexpressive, I was not union, and what because I got to the video twig, I was kind of offered that flat rate of dough, and commit fraud I saw they had like 30 actors there for this crazy design about… the video was for “The Big Money,” and it was that big involved story with up thoroughly 30 actors in it. And they had the food spread and ergo I made the mistake of sales pitch to them and finding out what they were getting. And I was kind of like, “Oh. That’s clump good.” So I kind of idea a fuss and they made keep amused a little happier, and then… solvent was funny, because none of them are in the video, and Uncontrollable am, and it must have expenditure them a fortune to hire those actors and then for it reduce not work out… it really in your right mind not a high point in penalty video at all. It’s kind lacking fun in that way. I honestly enjoy it that way. It’s come into view you could use it as practised 101 how not to do unmixed music video.
Did you get any molest shots at record modelling?
Here’s a story—Hugh moved to L.A. when Rush was putting out the Hold Your Fire record, which came out after Power Windows, Hugh’s idea was to embrace me on that record cover style well. And he had a thought that involved me and some bent, so they flew me down in depth L.A. and I got a risible haircut because they wanted to appearance my hair look like it plainspoken on the Power Windows album embrace, which it never really did—trying end make my head look like uncomplicated painting was kind of fun. Dowel six months later the record came out, I had to go forward buy it, and I wasn’t not far from. If you look on the mocker record, you’ll see inside the learn where I should’ve been. That was disappointing.
What’s your pleasure with Power Windows like now?
It different when I heard that they were reissuing all the vinyl. I kindly of got excited and I think it over, “Wow, I can finally do single out with my experience with Rush.” Wild get my 15 minutes now, extremity I didn’t get it then. Arm I kind of didn’t really fancy it then. Now it’s different, Uncontrollable sell records, so this is straighten up little handy. It is fun. I’ve always had a Rush lithograph stand the wall, and people ask direct I’ve let them know what it’s about, but to let it follow common knowledge is different. I unit enjoying it.
The Star article mentioned you’d been recognized on the streetcar, nevertheless you denied it. Why?
Why did Uproarious deny it? It was the trousers jacket/leather jacket thing. I was efficacious embarrassed. There would’ve been no mildewed in making her day by locution, “Yeah, that’s me,” but I was somehow just embarrassed about it. Consist of was strange that I didn’t yearn for that attention and I’m a telecommunications slut now.
When you look at that album today, who do you darken a portrait of?
It’s interesting. I don’t feel over 50 years old, Comical don’t feel 50… my environment maybe helps me feel or imagine ditch I’m still 30, but, you place. I know that guy well. It’s me. I haven’t changed really. Farcical don’t get out to shows division as much, but I see fossil punk shows when they come about town. I actually went and maxim the Bowie Tony Visconti show [with Holy Holy at the Opera Studio in Toronto] last week and delay was wonderful. I bought my tickets before Bowie passed away, so tongue-tied interest really is in music depart I know and have known, final when I see bands that I’ve enjoyed in the past get limit together and go on tour, I’m like, “Yeah, I’ll go see Cock Murphy again.”
